Decorating with an Asian Theme

April 17th, 2010 · No Comments

Wondering how you can improve the look of your home with something exotic and unique?  Why not take your home on an exotic adventure to the Far East?  With it’s exotic flavor, Asian decor can be a beautiful decorating choice, but requires some restraint.  In fact, when planning out your Asian decorating adventure, simplicity is the key to success.  No need to overdo it, when it comes to Asian themed decorating, less is more.

Color:  For the walls, think beige or tan, inspired by aged bamboo or rice parchment. The neutrality of the beige tone sets the stage for an exploration of some Asian inspired colors at the bolder end of the color spectrum.  Liberal use of black and white in furniture and accents can be desirable.  Choose greens that remind you of a bamboo jungle or a jade sculpture.  A touch of bold red and some gold also conjure up images of the Orient.

Floors: An obvious choice is bamboo flooring which looks great but can be costly.  A less expensive alternative is laminate flooring. However, any wood or laminate flooring will do just fine.  Stone and ceramic tile look great to terra-cotta tile will really make a statement.  It might seem like an oriental rug is a requirement, but avoid the temptation and potential expense.  Instead, seek out a jute rug. This loomed, natural fiber alternative offers a simple solution that supports your design theme well.It shouldn’t be hard to find a rug that’s 6′ x 9′ for around $200.  For the budget conscious, seek out a wool blend or synthetic version.

Silk drapes in dramatic colors can be the perfect look for window treatments. Consider using gold cord and tassels to pull them back and take advantage of the ambient light.   For a more casual vibe, consider roll-up bamboo shades. You can find bamboo blinds that are painted in Asian themes with calligraphy, classical oriental art of Asian symbols.

Lighting: Chinese lanterns can be found in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes not to mention budget.   these are great.  The use of candles or faux candles can complement the room as well.  Do your best to avoid modern or period-specific lighting.  Water plays an important role in Asian culture, so a lighted water treatment or fountain might make a good substitute for a lamp.

If you’re going to break the budget, this is where you might want to do it.  Lacquered furniture is frequently seen in Asian homes.  Often finished in a polished black tone, it can make a grand statement sure to please the eye.  Armoires, curios, desks, small tables, or stools are all options.  These pieces are usually hand painted with unique designs, florals and landscapes or with scenes of every day Chinese life.  Wicker and Bamboo furniture will be perfectly welcome in your Asian decorated room as well.

Decorations: Now you get to really have some fun. Make bold decisions, just remember the axiom that “less is more”.  For function, consider a Shonji room divider available in hundreds of looks and colors. Buddha decor can be a fun, funky option.  Considering displaying a few Buddha figurines in various poses. To add a bit of whimsy to your room consider a laughing Buddha statue.  Feng Shui princicples are based on promoting positive energy but there ideas are equally suited to good design.

Carvings in jade, porcelain statues and figurines, silk paintings and Asian wall art are all great choices.  Porcelain vases or fishbowls make a great Asian decor accents as well.  Ginger or tea jars, bonsai trees, bamboo plants, Asian clocks and mirros are all excellent decorating options. The only thing standing in the way of your perfect Asian inspired room is lack of imagination.

Have a blast with all the great decorating options, just remember that in the case of Asian-themed decorating it’s important not to overdo it.  A cluttered room won’t give you the desired effect.  Don’t overdo it. Use a few key decorative accessories to project your theme. You can always add more later.
