Why Do People Collect Stuff

March 3rd, 2010 · No Comments

Surely, most people (if not all), have had something that they started collecting for a long period of time. People usually collect meaningful stuff or those that hold their interest for a long while. These include, but are not limited to: bottle caps, stamps, leaves, rocks, shells, action figures, figurines, plastic models, t-shirts, key chains, and even stuff worth over a hundred bucks. Collectibles can be anything, really, as long as the person who collects them believe they are worth collecting.

People have different reasons for collecting them and some of those are:

Satisfaction – The love of collecting interesting things is present in most people. The good feeling whenever a piece has been added can be quite fulfilling. The satisfaction is even greater when the whole collection is completed.

Interest – Some collectibles are specifically tailored for people who hold interest in them. Some examples include action figures and comics for superhero fans or figurines for those who like cute stuff such as Precious Moments figurines. Some people also collect things that are currently popular or trendy. The problem with those types of collections is that when the fad is gone, interest in collecting them also wanes.

Fun – Collecting collectibles can be fun so many people do it as a hobby. It is especially nice to see one’s collection growing and like what people would say in a party, the more the merrier.

Trading – Some people collect rare or limited pieces of certain collectibles for trading with other people and gaining a profit out of doing so. Alternatively, there are those who collect things that they know they can use to trade for stuff that can be added to their own collection.

Selling – You will often find people selling completed sets of collectibles online for a really high price. Some pieces, such as the rare, unique, or limited ones can also fetch a good price. These are usually collectors who feel satisfied with their collection and would rather make money rather than keep them.

The above are just some of the most common reasons but there are others as well. Have you ever had your own collection? If you have, what was the reason you did?
