Any one knows that there are practical reasons for not having horned Viking helmets. Any battle smart warrior would know that having horns jetting out from your helmet would provide the enemy a place to take advantage of and throw you around. In battle, Vikings wore customary Sutton Hoo type of helmets that did not have horns. Really? Yes!
Before the horn legend was made popular, Viking helmets were shown to have wings on them. This can be also not historically accurate. However where did these myths come back from? Recent texts counsel that clergymen may have worn headdresses with horns for religious ceremonies. They’ll have been worn for decorations as well. But, what got the myths going was the ancient Romans and Greeks who came back from Britain saying the soldiers and folks wore outlandish headdresses and helmets. Also, Roman generals and soldiers claimed {that the} Gauls and Germanic tribes usually wore helmets with horns or antlers, and typically whole animals on their heads for intimidation.
This part could be correct to some extent, however it will not mean the Vikings raided cities with their fearsome helmets. But, this is probably where the Viking horned helmet came into being. In fact, this tradition and myth was passed down from generation to generation by stories and pictures.
In the fashionable world, Viking helmets are portrayed with horns not because they are historically correct, but because they make good looking costumes. Who would not want an intimidating, blood thirsty Viking warrior wearing a horned helmet? Raping and pillaging through out Western and Eastern Europe.Spreading of the Genes, that is why some believe Eastern European women are so gorgeous!
